Headaches/Migraines

Headaches are painful episodes that can completely incapacitate someone. Increasingly painful headaches that last for hours or days are known as migraines. Migraines can make you nauseous, sensitive to sound or light, and are typically specific to one side of your head. Generally, migraines are genetic and run in families. Headaches are typically categorized into two types — primary and secondary.

Types of Headaches

Primary headaches – random occurring headaches that have no cause

  • Tension, the most common headache, feels like a band squeezing your head
  • Combination, feels like a band squeezing your head, can make you sensitive to sound or light
  • Cluster, pain occurs around your eye

Secondary headaches occur due to a medical condition, including:

  • Hormonal headache
  • Concussion
  • Flu
  • Stroke

Causes of Headaches

  • Jaw clenching
  • Skipped meals
  • Alcohol use
  • Illegal drug use
  • Arthritis
  • Medication
  • Hormonal changes
  • Excess consumption of caffeine
  • Changes in barometric pressure
  • Exposure to noise or light
  • Lack of sleep
